Come be a part of our new lab!

Do you have interests in animal behavior, evolution, ecology, global change biology, natural history, and/or herpetology? Are you passionate about scientific research and working as part of a diverse, interdisciplinary team? Can you see yourself living and working in beautiful southern Appalachia? You may be a good fit for the Moss Lab. To preview potential projects, check out our research page. There is ample scope to explore individual research interests within the core research themes and systems. To learn more about Jen's mentoring philosophy, check out the teaching and mentoring page.

Prospective students should email Jen their CV and a description of their research interests and experience before applying: jbmoss [at] vt [dot] edu

Prospective Graduate Students

The Moss Lab is no longer considering new applicants for Fall 2024. However, applicants interested in starting a graduate program in 2025 are encouraged to review VT's Department of Biological Sciences research areas and application requirements as well as their eligibility for graduate fellowships, either through VT's Interfaces of Global Change Program or the NSF's Graduate Research Fellowship Program. GREs are not required to apply and our graduate program guarantees support (including summer salary) as long as the student is making progress. All graduate students are required to teach for at least one semester. Current starting stipends for research (GRA) and teaching (GTA) assistantships are ~$29K/year and Ph.D. students receive a raise after passing their preliminary exams. The application deadline for Fall is December 15, but interested applicants should express interest to their faculty sponsor (Jen) no later than August/September to begin the interview process. If you are invited to apply, I will arrange an on-campus visit for you in the Spring so you can determine whether the lab will be a good fit for you.

Prospective PostDocs

I do not currently have funding for postdoc appointments but would love to work with interested candidates on securing an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology and/or collaborative grant.

Prospective Undergraduates

Undergraduates interested in conducting an independent research project with me or simply getting their feet wet by volunteering on existing projects or working as paid animal caretakers are always welcome to reach out. Check out the Department of Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research page to review the kinds of opportunities available.
